This study was conducted to develop the concept of reminiscence and to pre-sent an example of the concept development process.
Concept can be developed either by literature review or through experimental observations. Also it can be proceeded by either one of the above method, and then confirmed by the other. For example, hybrid model utilizes literature review first, then put the results of the review to the test in the field work.
Concept clarification by Kramer, on the other hand, draws the concept from the field observations first, then Search the literature to confirm the results extracted from the observations.
The process for this study consisted of three steps ; extensive literature review, repeated indepth interviews of 30 elderly, and comparison and analysis of the results drawn from the previous steps.
Definition of reminiscence thus derived is "thinking and talking to others about the significant past experiences." The operational definition is "talking to others about the significant past experiences with or without emotions, which may arise spontaneously or purposefully."
It is time consuming and requires much efforts to carry out extensive literature re-view, repeated indepth interviews and analysis of those results. Despite this disadvantages it seems essential for the development of concepts, especially when those can be used as nursing interventions. The advantages of this process are to explore not only the definition and characteristics of the concepts but also to identify the various unforeseen outcomes as results of concept application in the clinical field.
